Mother 3 Fan Translation Freely Offered To Nintendo

Mother 3 Title Card 620x Mother 3 Fan Translation Freely Offered To Nintendo

With Earthbound (Mother 2 in Japan) finally being released on the WiiU Virtual Console, fans of the series are now wondering about the third installment to the series. Mother 3 made its release in 2006 on the Game Boy Advance. The only problem with this is that it was given a Japan-only release. It has since become a hush-hush subject for Nintendo but fans are getting a bit surly. This is most likely due to them only being able to play the game through an emulator and translation patch combo.

The translation patch was released for free by some very dedicated fans and they are now trying to offer it to Nintendo. A recent post made on their Mother 3 Fan Translation Blog explains the translator’s hopes,

” When we released the MOTHER 3 fan translation patch in 2008, it was because it was clear that Nintendo had no interest in releasing an official translation of the game. Still, there’s always the hope that the game might be re-released someday on some new platform, at which time us fans will clamor for an official translation yet again.

I realize that localizing a game this size can cost a lot, so if it’ll help in even the slightest, I’ll gladly offer to let Nintendo use my text translation files for any use at all, completely for free. I’ll even edit the files to fit whatever new standards are necessary (content, formatting, memory size, etc.), completely for free. I’ll even retranslate everything from scratch if need be. Just whatever it takes to get an official release out.”

The post really shows how much love the translator, Mandelin, has for this series. There is a very slim chance that Nintendo will take the offer but the blog made sure to point out that other games have successfully used fan translations in the past,

“It might seem unlikely for a legitimate company to use a fan translation or work with fan translators, but it has happened before – Ys: The Oath in Felghana is one recent example. It’s more common among visual novel games at the moment, but I believe this sort of thing will only become more and more common over time. Only when the works in question are up to a certain standard of quality, of course.”

It is great to see such an effort being made to have the third installment of Mother officially released in English. Nintendo has not made any comments on the offer (And most likely won’t, unfortunately) but hopefully someone in the upper food-chain will take it to heart.

The Mother series is a too unique and well thought out to be ignored the way it has. We have a good chance of part 3 being brought over state-side and I will definitely be keeping my fingers crossed that it happens.
